The parties set the duration in the contract; the law does not fix one. A consumer, meaning an individual not selling for professional purposes, can withdraw within 14 days without giving a reason if the contract was negotiated away from the agency’s premises (Consumer Code art. 52). After that, an early exit depends on the contract: without just cause you risk a penalty or damages, although for a consumer a manifestly excessive penalty is presumed unfair (art. 33). Sellers acting for their business, such as a company, do not have these protections. If automatic renewal appears in the agency’s standard terms, it is valid only if specifically approved in writing (Civil Code art. 1341). As a professional mediator, Trevi Elite offers very flexible exit terms. Our guide to choosing a luxury agency in Rome lists the checks to make before signing.
